On the role of Convexity in Isoperimetry, Spectral Gap and Concentration

چکیده

We show that for convex domains in Euclidean space, Cheeger’s isoperimetric inequality, spectral gap of the Neumann Laplacian, exponential concentration of Lipschitz functions, and the a-priori weakest requirement that Lipschitz functions have arbitrarily slow uniform tail-decay, are all quantitatively equivalent (to within universal constants, independent of the dimension). This substantially extends previous results of Maz’ya, Cheeger, Gromov– Milman, Buser and Ledoux. As an application, we conclude a sharp quantitative stability result for the spectral gap of convex domains under convex perturbations which preserve volume (up to constants) and under maps which are “on-average” Lipschitz. We also provide a new characterization (up to constants) of the spectral gap of a convex domain, as one over the square of the average distance from the “worst” subset having half the measure of the domain. In addition, we easily recover and extend many previously known lower bounds on the spectral gap of convex domains, due to Payne–Weinberger, Li–Yau, Kannan– Lovász–Simonovits, Bobkov and Sodin. The proof involves estimates on the diffusion semigroup following Bakry–Ledoux and a result from Riemannian Geometry on the concavity of the isoperimetric profile. Our results extend to the more general setting of Riemannian manifolds with density which satisfy the CD(0,∞) curvature-dimension condition of BakryÉmery.

Some Results on Convex Spectral Functions: I

In this paper, we give a fundamental convexity preserving for spectral functions. Indeed, we investigate infimal convolution, Moreau envelope and proximal average for convex spectral functions, and show that this properties are inherited from the properties of its corresponding convex function. This results have many applications in Applied Mathematics such as semi-definite programmings and eng...

The Limit of Convexity Based Isoperimetry: Sampling Harmonic-Concave Functions

Logconcave functions represent the current frontier of efficient algorithms for sampling, optimization and integration in Rn [LV06a]. Efficient sampling algorithms to sample according to a probability density (to which the other two problems can be reduced) relies on good isoperimetry which is known to hold for arbitrary logconcave densities. In this paper, we extend this frontier in two ways: ...

Inflation Determinants in Low and High Frequencies: An Implication of Spectral Analysis to Iran

There is no evidence that previous studies, available to Iran’s inflation literature, have used spectral methodology to analyze a possible relationship between inflation and its main determinants within a specific period. Accordingly, the present study investigates the effects of money growth, real output growth, output gap and interest rate changes on inflation at low and high frequencies...

Correlated Effect of Air Gap and PVP Concentration on the Structure and Performance of PVDF Ultrafiltration Hollow Fiber Membrane

Polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVDF/PVP) hollow fiber membranes were fabricated by dry-jet wet-spinning process. The correlated effects of the air gap length and PVP concentration ((1) the air gap length effect at the low and high PVP concentration in the dope solutions, as well as (2) the effect of the PVP concentration at the same air gap length) on the cross-section structure ...

Sampling s-Concave Functions: The Limit of Convexity Based Isoperimetry

Efficient sampling, integration and optimization algorithms for logconcave functions [BV04,KV06,LV06a] rely on the good isoperimetry of these functions. We extend this to show that −1/(n− 1)-concave functions have good isoperimetry, and moreover, using a characterization of functions based on their values along every line, we prove that this is the largest class of functions with good isoperime...
